Some Truths About Writing

Note: I wrote this piece in 2012 for another blog. I thought it might be interesting to revisit the topic. I've updated it a bit, but the overall idea is the same.
Some Truths About Writing
We've all seen it before, in movies, TV shows, and even books. Someone writes a book, a publisher picks it up, and voila! The aforementioned person is immediately wealthy, rich beyond their wildest imagination and overnight, he becomes a household name. He goes from eating ramen noodles every night, to owning a mansion -- complete with butler and guard dogs -- and driving around town in a Ferrari or Porsche.

It Must Always Be About The Writing

I've been asked many questions over the past two years as they pertain to being an independent author. Some of the most often asked questions have the same vein: How do you find your readers? How do you market your books? How do you sell so many copies?

While those are are very important questions, I think people miss the most important part about this business: The writing.

Before you worry about marketing, finding readers or selling

Welcome!

Recently, I've been asked lots of different questions from lots of different people pertaining to being an independent author -- or as we like to call ourselves -- an indie author.  I usually answer the questions privately via email or Private Messages or more publicly in Facebook posts. I'm finding that I'm being asked pretty much the same questions over and over again and that is not a bad thing. But sometimes I feel I'm limited or restrained in answering those great questions.

So I've decided to start a blog that deals with writing and publishing as an independent author.

The objective of this blog isn't to teach you "How to sell a zillion books over night!" because that won't happen. We'll talk about that at a later date.

I'll be blunt, honest, and straightforward. I'll tell you what has worked for me and what I've learned along the way. I will not make any promises that if you follow my blog you'll be an over-night success. That's BS and any one who promises you such a thing is full of BS. Most adults will tell you that it can sometimes take 25 years to be an over-night success. I'm one of those adults.

I will invite other indie authors to weigh in and offer their perspectives too. You can ask pretty much any question you want save for 2 -- how old I really am and/or how much I weigh. ;o) Other than that, pretty much anything goes here.

Here are the rules:

1. Cursing and cruelty can take a hike. If you want to be mean spirited find another blog.

2. Do NOT pimp your book here. This is not the place to shout "Buy my book!! Buy my book!!" Such posts will be promptly removed.

3.  This is a no whine zone.  Venting is one thing, whining is all together different.

4. Do not ask me to read your book. I don't have time.

Now that we have that out of the way...lets get down to business!
